Pakistan Women Set for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Opener Against India

Pakistan will launch their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a highly anticipated clash against India on Sunday, 14 June, at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The tournament, organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will run from 12 June to 5 July and marks a historic milestone for women’s cricket. For the first time, the competition has expanded to 12 teams, making it the largest Women’s T20 World Cup ever staged. A total of 33 matches will be played across seven venues, while the final is scheduled to take place at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on 5 July.

Pakistan Drawn in Challenging Group

Pakistan have been placed in Group 1 alongside six-time champions Australia, India, South Africa, Bangladesh and tournament debutants Netherlands.

Group 2 consists of defending champions New Zealand, hosts England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Scotland.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, which are scheduled for 30 June and 2 July.

Fatima Sana Leads Pakistan Again

All-rounder Fatima Sana will captain Pakistan at her second consecutive Women’s T20 World Cup. The 24-year-old enters the tournament in outstanding form after producing a record-breaking performance against Zimbabwe in Karachi last month.

During Pakistan’s 3-0 T20I series sweep, Fatima smashed the fastest half-century in Women’s T20 International history, reaching the landmark in just 15 deliveries. The achievement surpassed the previous world record of 18 balls.

Three Players Set for World Cup Debut

Pakistan will feature three ICC Women’s T20 World Cup debutants in the form of Eyman Fatima, Saira Jabeen and Rameen Shamim.

The squad also includes experienced names such as Muneeba Ali Siddiqui, Gull Feroza, Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig, Nashra Sundhu, Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan. Iram Javed and Ayesha Zafar complete the 15-member lineup.

Natalia Parvaiz and Tasmia Rubab, who were part of Pakistan’s 2018 and 2024 World Cup squads respectively, remain the only current players who previously travelled to a World Cup without making an appearance.

Key Performers in Pakistan’s Squad

Wicketkeeper-batter Muneeba Ali Siddiqui enters the tournament as Pakistan’s highest run-scorer in Women’s T20 World Cup history among current squad members. She has scored 247 runs in 17 innings, including a memorable unbeaten 102 against Ireland in 2023 — the first century by a Pakistan woman in T20 Internationals.

Left-arm spinner Nashra Sundhu leads Pakistan’s wicket-taking charts among the current squad with 16 wickets in 16 World Cup appearances. Her best figures remain 4 for 18 against Ireland during the 2023 edition.

Preparations Ahead of the Tournament

Pakistan’s preparations included an away T20I series against South Africa, a home series against Zimbabwe, training camps, and a Women’s T20I tri-series in Ireland featuring the hosts and West Indies between 28 May and 4 June.

The team also played warm-up matches against Sri Lanka on 6 June and Scotland on 9 June in Derby to fine-tune preparations before the tournament.

Wahab Riaz Confident of Strong Showing

Pakistan women’s team mentor Wahab Riaz expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete on the global stage.

He highlighted the team’s recent cricketing exposure through international series and tournaments, describing the group as young, energetic and capable of rising to the occasion.

Wahab stated that the team’s focus is on playing fearless and positive cricket while trusting the hard work they have put in over recent months.

Discussing Pakistan’s group, he acknowledged the strength of the opposition but stressed that the blend of youth and experience could help the team challenge for a semi-final place.

He also noted that conditions in the United Kingdom generally favour seam and swing bowling, but Pakistan have adapted well through their participation in the Ireland tri-series and warm-up fixtures in Derby.
