KMC Solarisation Initiative has been unveiled as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) announced to invest Rs750 million in a citywide solar energy project during the 2026-27 fiscal year. The initiative aims to power municipal buildings, street lights and selected public roads using renewable energy while reducing electricity costs and improving public services.
KMC has made announcement ahead of its upcoming budget presentation. Civic authority claims that the project is part of its long-term strategy to modernise Karachi’s infrastructure, improve energy efficiency and promote environment friendly development.
Officials said the KMC Solarisation Initiative is designed to reduce the city’s dependence on conventional electricity while ensuring uninterrupted municipal services, especially in areas frequently affected by power outages. The project will contribute to lowering Karachi’s carbon emissions through greater use of renewable energy.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab described climate resilience and energy sustainability as essential for modern urban management. According to him the project will reduce electricity expenses, improve service delivery and strengthen the city’s ability to provide reliable civic facilities.
KMC Solarisation Initiative to Expand Renewable Energy Projects
According to KMC, the solar programme builds on previous efforts launched more than two years ago and around 50 street lights were provided to every Union Committee in Karachi without political discrimination.
During the current fiscal year, KMC spent more than Rs110 million on upgrading street-lighting infrastructure throughout the city. Major roads, including Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-i-Firdousi and Shahrah-i-Iran, have already received improved lighting systems that will enhance road safety and the city’s overall appearance.

The corporation also revealed that sections of its head office have already been converted to solar power. Officials said the project resulted in significant savings on electricity bills while reducing environmental impact. Encouraged by those results, KMC now plans to expand solar installations to additional municipal offices, Union Council facilities and other public infrastructure.
The civic body believes solar-powered infrastructure will provide greater operational independence during electricity shortages and improve essential municipal services for residents.
Project Aims to Reduce Costs and Improve Public Services
The KMC Solarisation Initiative is expected to particularly benefit neighbourhoods that continue to experience frequent load-shedding. Solar-powered street lights and municipal facilities can continue operating even when conventional electricity supplies are disrupted, helping improve public safety and civic operations.
Mayor Wahab said the current KMC administration has focused on implementing development projects rather than making announcements without execution. He added that residents can judge the administration based on completed projects, including road rehabilitation, parks, digital governance, revenue reforms, street-lighting improvements and municipal services.
Urban development experts believe renewable energy projects such as this could help local governments reduce long-term operational expenses while supporting Pakistan’s broader transition towards cleaner energy sources. Rising electricity prices have increased interest in solar power among both public institutions and private consumers across the country.
If implemented successfully, the Rs750 million programme could become one of Karachi’s largest municipal renewable energy projects. Besides reducing electricity bills, the initiative is expected to improve the reliability of civic services and strengthen the city’s environmental sustainability goals.
The KMC is expected to allocate funding for the project in its FY2026-27 budget, with implementation planned after financial approval. More details regarding project timelines, installation phases and targeted locations are likely to be announced once the new fiscal year’s budget is presented.
